Vocational Technology University launched 31 03 2009

President Rajapaksa has pointed out that the Government was fulfilling its responsibilities in all sectors sans being confined to defeating terrorism. The President said Troops are liberating the country which is being split in the North. The Government is not only paying attention to routing terrorism, but to was giving due consideration to other sectors as well. Development has taken place in all sectors. The launching of the University proves that the Government is not only engaged in developing the country but has also drawn its attention to the young generation. The Presiddent was speaking at the inauguration of the first University of Vocational Technology. It fulfils another pledge in the Mahinda Chintana. The University built at the National Technical Educational Institute premises in Ratmalana, cost 340 million rupees. The President and the guests visited the exhibition showcasing vocational education and training. A commemorative stamp and a first day cover were also issued. The President received a memento and a commemorative photograph for his outstanding services in the vocational training sector. Prof. Kapila Gunasekera is the Vice Chancellor of the University. Minister Piyasena Gamage said the vesting of the new University in the students is a noteworthy event. Developed countries gave prominence to vocational training as youths are directly involved in it. He said students unable to gain admission to conventional Universities can place their hopes in this University. Ministers Dayashritha Tissera, Chandrasiri Gajadeera and Duminda Dissanayake, Deputy Ministers M.S. Sellasamy and P. Radhakrishnan and several scholars were present.

Sri Lanka has the best mini hydropower technology

Sri Lanka becomes the only country in the world to possess the most successful mini hydropower technology. It was revealed at a workshop in Colombo that the United Nations had made the listing. The workshop was organized to appraise hydropower engineers of African countries about the mini hydropower technology. Hydropower engineers from Kenya, Tansania, Uganda, Ruwanda and Malawi participated in the workshop. Among those who delivered lectures were President of the Mini Hydropower Development Association Nishantha Nanayakkara, Chairman of the Central Engineering Bureau Nihal Rupasinghe and Professor Sumana Bandara Weerakoon..
